Bird Roll Call: Little Grebe, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Common Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Whiskered Tern, White Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Citrine Wagtail, Indian Pond Heron, Little Egret, Great Egret, Common Moorhen, Little Bittern, Indian Pond Heron, Grey Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Brown-headed Gull, Green Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Common Coot, Mallard, Common Pochard, Black Kite and Barn Swallow.

The famous Dal Lake of Kashmir has been described as "hardly what one would expect a lake to be like - it's a maze of intricate waterways and channels, floating islands of vegetation, houseboats that look so firmly moored they could almost be islands and hotels on islands which look like they could simply float away".

One can take a shikara trip through the intricate waterways to experience an city within the lake with its own way of life or take a pleasure cruise on the Dal Lake. Many birds can be observed simply by walking or cycling along the Lake. Birds observed along the lake shore include Plumbeous Redstart, Clamorous Reed Warbler, Isabelline Wheatear, Rosy Pipit, Himalayan Bulbul, House Sparrow, Long-tailed Shrike, Common Myna, Rock Pigeon, Eurasian Collared Dove, Eurasian Cuckoo, Common Hoopoe, Common Starling, Eurasian Jackdaw, Long-tailed Minivet, Tree Pipit, Rose-ringed Parakeet and House Crow.
