Shivpora

Shivpora, on the outskirts of Srinagar city, is my local patch. Large town gardens, the bund [embankment] along the river Jehlum, the river-bank and extensive patches of woodland offer a wide range of bird habitats and a surprisingly large variety of birds can be observed locally. A breeding population of European Rollers can be observed in the summer. Other breeding populations include Eurasian Golden Orioles, Ashy Drongoes, Asian Paradise-flycatchers and Pied Kingfishers.

A walk on the bund which is at tree-level offers good opportunities for observing arboreal birds on one side and waders and aquatic birds in the river and river-bank on the other. Migratory birds can also be observed flying over the area which is at the extreme south of Srinagar city.
